For aging baby boomers who can’t seem to get their fill of memorabilia from their innocent years, Runkel Bros. American Garage is a high-test concept at the Mall of America. Dispensing licensed product from American institutions such as Harley-Davidson and Coke to images of screen idols like Marilyn Monroe and James Dean, this corner gas station met strict criteria for both authenticity and budget. A 10-foot setback from the lease line creates a stage-like branded environment, which facilitates the transition to the retail theater inside. There, simple industrial fixtures and pegboard display the merchandise that just has to be checked out, as long as the “oil and air” are being checked, too.
